Us green card is Different from US Citizenship



There are multiple methods of applying for US permanent residence. The right choice of the method depends on the fact whether the applicant is living inside or outside the territory of the United States. Us green card can be sought on the basis of a job in the country or family living in there or as a refugee. Among other ways, one is diversity visa, which has been explained above. 

Us green cardare often confused with the citizenship. Both are different things. Greencard ensures lawful residence of an alien in the US but it does not guarantee to make him a citizen. Path to attain citizenship begins after an alien has lived for five years in the US under lawful residence permit. After completing this tenure, he shall apply for naturalization or to become a citizen of the United State. A relaxation however exists for those who are aliens living lawfully in the US but are married to a US citizen. In this case, the time period applicant needs to reside within the US is lessoned from five to three years. This is one of the reasons that many immigrants in the US marry with a US citizen to ease their path of citizenship.
